a funny(ish) story

Okay, it's probably not that funny, but I tend to entertain myself very easily. I'm the first one to laugh at my jokes and sometimes the only one that laughs. I'm okay with that.

Anyway, on to the story...

When I was in Denver helping to open the new Ling & Louie's, we trainers (Hospitality Hot Shots, that is) would come up with an "ice breaker" to start the day with all of the servers and hostesses we were training. One day, the "ice breaker" was to say your favorite animal and who your "celebrity freebie" would be...in the opposite gender's voice. So, in a man's voice, I said, "I love rottweilers because they're so STRONG!!! And I would totally do Bill Murray!!!" It was a joke, of course, but the reaction was great. Good old Makayla said Jackie Chan, and one of the servers said Borat, so there were a couple other funny answers.

I got an email from milliondollarbody.com (which has some awesome workout programs...I have Slim in 6) with Bill Murrays 6 New Years Resolution Tips, and it made me laugh because of my prior reference to Bill Murray. Here's his list of tips:

"Baby steps." In What About Bob?, Bill plays a manipulative obsessive-compulsive learning to get through life using "baby steps," as suggested by his shrink, Richard Dreyfuss. Try baby steps with your resolutions. You don't need to swear off all processed sugar and have washboard abs by the end of 2009. Start by limiting sweets to once a week and working out 5 days a week. If that's too much, swear off ice cream and walk 3 days a week. Pick an achievable goal, and when you reach it, pick another one.

"A former greenskeeper, now about to become the Masters champion." Baby steps might not be enough for you. Maybe it's six-pack abs or nothing. If this is the case, think about Bill in Caddyshack. As groundskeeper Carl, he spends the entire film hatching grandiose plans to beat that gopher.

It never occurs to him to take it one hole at a time. The same goes for you. The abs can be the goal, but start with cleaning up the diet, getting the exercise on a regular basis, burning the fat, building the muscle, etc. This way, if the year is up and you haven't quite got the abs you want, you'll still feel like you accomplished a lot along the way.

"If that were our plane, it'd be crashing." In Quick Change, Bill robs a New York bank. It goes off without a hitch, until the supposed "easy part," the getaway to the airport, turns out to be wrought with obstacles, thus forcing him to continually improvise.

It's almost certain that you're going to hit all kinds of surprise road bumps on the way to your goals. Your body is every bit as complex and chaotic as Manhattan is to Bill and his accomplices. When things go egg-shaped, change your route or, if necessary, alter your goals.

"Stewardess, is there a movie on this flight?" In Stripes, Bill joins the army, but he brings the party with him. P90X® may be a boot camp, but that doesn't mean you can't have a little fun mingled in with the pain. Pick an outfit you're dying to wear and make it a goal to fit into it. Learn to jump rope. Buy a pogo stick and pledge to get up to 100 bounces. Make a point of going dancing once a month. Mock Tony as he bosses you around on screen—whatever it takes.

"How about a little teamsmanship?" The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou finds Bill struggling to understand the relationships in his life. In the end, he learns about the power of friendship and family. The same goes for you. Don't be afraid to ask for support from the people around you. Or, you can also look to the Beachbody Message Boards and to our workout partnering system, WOWY.com, for motivation and inspiration.

"We came, we saw, we kicked its . . . ." Bill goes up against insurmountable odds to defeat the Sumerian god Gozer the Gozerian in Ghostbusters. Sometimes, it may feel like you'd have better luck fighting the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man than achieving your goals. The odds may be against you, the pounds of fat many, and the cravings intense, but if you sit there and fret, you'll never know if you can do it. The same lesson can be pulled from watching Bill play the role of Polonius in Hamlet. Bill Murray doing Shakespeare? Exactly. You never know unless you try, so don't be afraid of no ghost.

"I'll give you a winter prediction: It's gonna be cold, it's gonna be grey, and it's gonna last you for the rest of your life." If you try and you fail, remember Groundhog Day, which finds Bill living the same day over and over until he gets it right. Just because you mess up your resolution doesn't mean you've been beaten. Just take a deep breath and try again. Eventually, you'll figure it out. And don't forget, if your goal is to do Slim in 6® but you only made it through 4 weeks, that's still 4 weeks of fitness that will back you up for your next try.

Listen to Uncle Bill. He knows what he's talking about. Take this advice regarding your resolutions, and, just as Bill famously said to John Candy in Stripes, you'll soon be a "lean, mean, fighting machine."

Well put, Bill...and Team Beachbody. :)

Lemonade and Thanksgiving

I haven't posted in awhile, I know. I've been a little preoccupied with posting about my health on a little blog I started up for that specific purpose. It is:

I Make Lemonade

I figured a good name for the website was "When Life Gives Me Lemons..." and the website is "I Make Lemonade." Clever. I know. :)

So, I'm pretty sure I have rheumatoid arthritis, and it sucks. That's been the focal point of my life for the last month. If you have any experience or advice, I'd love to hear about it! I started the blog to journal the physical challenges and growth, as well as the emotional challenges and growth. Turns out, there will be some relationship challenges and growth as well. So, check it out if you want. You might end up thinking I'm a total weenie after reading it, but that's okay. I know I'm a tough girl...I'm just trying to be really honest in my journaling.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Patrick and I are driving down to Phoenix to spend Thanksgiving with my parents and siblings. I'm excited to see them. We were last down there for Christmas last year. This time of year, I miss the heat sooooo much! We'll be down there from Wednesday through Sunday, then Patrick will drive back to Utah Sunday so he can be back to work on Monday. Monday morning I fly to Denver to help open a new restaurant. I thoroughly enjoy training, so I'm quite excited about this opportunity. I'm hopefully finding a camera soon, so I'll post pictures of the adventures I'll be having over the next 3 weeks. :)
Running Shoes!
Alice from I AM NOT FROM YOUR COUNTRY inspired me to pull out my running shoes.
I got these babies at Runners Corner in Orem, UT a couple years ago. I was so impressed with the store, the selection, and the staff. And I really love these shoes. My feet always felt great when I was out running around.
Since it has been about 1 1/2 years since I last put these on, I had forgotten how good they feel. I'm glad they're a little dirty, though, to remind me that yes, I did in fact run at one point in time for a purpose other than playing softball or chasing a jail-bird kitty. As a matter of fact, when I was running, I dropped weight pretty quick and felt fabulous. That was at a point in my life when my ex-husband was telling me all too often how fat and unattractive I was and that he was done being married. Once I realized that the love was gone, I started running as a form of self-medicating therapy. Good hell, endorphins are freaking amazing. I'd get done with a run, whether on the street or on a treadmill, and I'd feel like I could do anything, including kicking his ass for being such a jerk. :) I slimmed down, felt fabulous, and moved onto much better things in life, including my new fabulous husband, Patrick.
So, my shoes are by my bed. I'm going to start getting up early to go for a jog. I'm too out of shape to say that I'd be going for a run with any integrity. :) It will definitely be a jog for now. I need to get back to Slim in 6, too. I really enjoy Debby Siebers and her workout.
So, thank you, Alice, for reminding me of a tool I have been hiding for far too long!!!!
Watching my waistline
Yep, it's time for my post about my health!!!
My waistline is sitting at 35 inches. My BMI is 29.8 or so. And (shhh, don't repeat this, please) I'm weighing in at 166. This sucks because I was down to 161. The recent 5lb gain is due to eating like a crazy woman over the holidays. Too much food, drinks, brownies, etc. Yikes! Yet, still on the happy side, I'm down 12lbs from my ultimate chubby weigh-in!
I went to a naturopathic doctor a few weeks ago, and I have 3 months to get pregnant if I am going to meet my goal of having my first baby before I turn 30. My 29th birthday is on Monday, the 14th, so that gives me a whopping 3 months. :) So, I need to do a cleanse, not a crazy intense cleanse, more of a whole foods/goodness cleanse. It's only 3 weeks long, so I can do that. I better be able to do that, for crying out loud! I wonder if I could healthily get down to 140 or so in 3 months. Is it safe to lose 26lbs in 3 months?
Anyway, that's my update. Improvement, relapse, recommit!!!
I'm going to start biking to and from work on Thursdays and Fridays. It's only 3 miles each way. I'm going to get back in the groove with Pilates and Yoga as well. I hurt my back a couple weeks ago, and now I'm having some scary circulation problems in my left ankle/foot. So I'm hoping that strengthening my core and stretching out my spine will help alleviate the problems.
Revised measurement strategy
I just found this site that explains how to take body measurements. I think I've been doing a few wrong, so I'm going to re-do it according to Your Total Health.
Also, I realized I have the flu, not a common cold. The symptoms I have are definitely in the flu category. That sucks.
...measurements, new are bold...
Weight 167
Bust 37.5"
Chest 32"
Waist 32.5"
Hips 44.5"
R. Thigh 26"
L. Thigh 26"
R. Knee 17.75"
L. Knee 17.5"
R. Calf 16"
L. Calf 15.75"
R. Bicep 13.5"
L. Bicep 13.5"
Neck 14"
Wrist 6.4" Total Inches 312.9"
BMI 30.5
Body Fat 27%
I don't know about the waist measurement. Where my "waist" is the smallest is above my belly button about an inch. It's a huge difference from where I was measuring, which was just below my belly button. It's crazy to realize the difference in circumference around my body within just a couple inches. Wow... 6.5" difference on my waist measurement. According to the chart I'm using to figure out my body fat%, I'm now well into the average category. That is just odd to me. Oh well...I don't know what to do about it...
Stats Update
This really is a bit humiliating, and I don't have to put this on my blog, but I am a woman driven by accountability. The last time I documented my weight and measurements I said I was going to do a weekly update of weight, stats, and pictures...yeah...that didn't happen.
I have lost a little bit of weight since then, not intentionally at all, but it is weight lost nonetheless. So, I just want to write it down so I don't dare backtrack back into the heavier side of life. ;)
Here are my June Physical Stats & Goals
My goals were to:
  • drop 45 lbs
  • lose 40" of body fat
  • get my body fat between 18% and 22%
  • get my BMI to 24
My Current Measurements as of Today:
Weight 167.4
Waist 39"
Hips 42"
Chest 37.5"
Ribcage 32"
R. Thigh 25.5"
L. Thigh 26"
R. Calf 15.5"
L. Calf 15.25"
R. Bicep 13.5"
L. Bicep 13.5"
Neck 14"
Wrist 6.4"
BMI 30.5
Body Fat 43%
Total inches measured= 280.15
Progress Report on Goals:
  • Lost 8 of 45 lbs
  • Lost 11.1" of 40" of body fat
  • Body Fat% down 6.16%...21% to go to reach 22% Total Body Fat
  • BMI at 30.5....goal is 24
I'm pretty excited to see my progress! Now imagine if I actually tried to lose some weight...exercising and eating right... :) Sorry, I don't feel like doing a picture just yet...maybe after I shower.
20minutenap.com
I found a great site on Stumble for taking a 20 Minute Nap.
I'm not a huge nap person...I LOVE to sleep, but doing it during the day seems to have a negative effect on the rest of my day. However, this site has approximately 20 minutes of great music to guide you through your nap, waking you up at the end. If nothing else, I'll probably utilize this to take a 20 minute BREAK, relaxing my mind and body instead of sleeping.
Master Cleanse
Today I started the Master Cleanse(MC). The longest I've ever gone before was 5 days (and 3 days another time). This time I am going to cleanse for at least 10 days. I've read that you should really go as long as it takes for all of the white stuff to come off of your tongue. The whiteness is a sign of candida in your system. So, once your tongue is back to a healthy pink color all over, then you're done cleansing. I'm hoping this won't take longer than 2 weeks, but who knows. It's been a long time since my body felt really healthy, it's only fair I put in whatever time is required to get it back to a happy state.
Already I'm having to watch my thoughts. Every so often I'll think to myself, "Mmm, a hamburger sounds really good right now," or "I wonder what there is to eat in the house?" Then I reach for my Lemon Aid (LA) and chug a lug. So far I've drank about 56 ounces. I need to drink another 32 ounces or so. The last time I did the MC I remember feeling like drinking 80 ounces or so of the LA was an unbearable task. This time (so far), it's been pretty easy.
Oh, last night I drank some Smooth Move tea and did the salt water flush (SWF) this morning. I'm sure it's because it's my first day, but the flushing took quite a while. It should take about 30 min when your system is running clean. That'll be nice, because who has a couple hours to lay around...staying near the toilet? Yeah, not me.
Tomorrow I start my new job as a server. I'm looking forward to it. Between that and the cleanse, I should get a pretty good jump start to a healthier lifestyle!
Progress starts at the beginning :)
I've got to do something about my physique! This blog is turning into my fitness journal. :) So, here's where I am starting from. It's not pretty, but at least I know I can make some excellent progress...
Weight 175 lbs
Waist 40"
Hips 45.5"
Chest 40.75"
Ribcage (under chest) 34"
R. Thigh 26.5"
L. Thigh 26.6"
R. Calf 15.25"
L. Calf 15.25"
R. Bicep 13.5"
L. Bicep 13.5"
Neck 14"
Wrist 6.4"
BMI 32
Body Fat 49.16%
My Goals:
Weight 130 lbs (loss of 45 lbs)
Body Inches lose 40"
Body Fat between 18% and 22%
BMI 24
Timeline:
December 31st is my deadline
I need to lose 2 lbs each week
I need to work out 6 days/week using Pilates and Slim in 6
I need to go run or play racquetball 5 days/week
I need to keep my caloric intake to 1600 calories/day (I HATE counting calories!!!)
And here's a visual: ;)
Me today ~
How I would like to look ~
I would LOVE to look like Jessica Beil. I fell in love with her body when I saw Stealth. The scene where she is in her bathing suit at the tropical waterfall/pool (I think) is a perfect example of how lean I would like my body to be. I think she's quite a bit taller than I am, so it's not very likely that I'll ever have her body, but still...that's what I'm shooting for.
Scarlett Johansson is a GREAT example of how I would like to look, because she's still so sexy and curvy AND lean. So I guess I would like to combine Scarlett's curves with Jessica's lean muscle and *poof*, there's my ideal body. :)
I'll journal my progress as I go. I'll post a weekly photo update with stats as well as anything else that comes to mind.
